Homemade Peanut Butter Oat Dog Treats

This is a classic, simple, and incredibly popular recipe among dog owners. The combination of peanut butter and oats makes for a wholesome, fiber-rich, and delicious crunchy treat that is perfect for dogs of all sizes.
Yields: Approximately 4-5 dozen small treats Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 18-20 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour (or all-purpose flour)
  • 1 cup rolled oats (old-fashioned or quick-cooking)
  • 1/2 cup natural, creamy peanut butter (ensure it is xylitol-free)
  • 1/2 cup water or low-sodium chicken/beef broth
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon honey (optional, for a touch of sweetness)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour and rolled oats.
  3. Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the peanut butter, water (or broth), eggs, and honey (if using) until smooth.
  4. Form Dough: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Mix until a stiff, cohesive dough forms. You may need to use your hands to knead it briefly. If the dough is too dry and crumbly, add water, one teaspoon at a time. If it’s too sticky, add a tablespoon of flour.
  5. Roll and Cut: On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough out to about 1/4-inch thickness. Use your favorite cookie cutter (a simple circle or heart works well) to cut out the treats. Place the cutouts on the prepared baking sheet.
  6. Bake: Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden brown and the treats are firm to the touch.
  7. Cool and Store: Let the treats cool completely on a wire rack. They will harden as they cool, giving them a satisfying crunch.
Storage: Store cooled treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week, or in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. They can be frozen for up to 3 months.
