These savory and slightly sweet treats are a fantastic way to spoil your dog. The combination of chicken broth and peanut butter makes them irresistible, and they are perfect for training or just a daily snack.
Yields: Approximately 3-4 dozen small bone-shaped treats Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 20-25 minutes
Ingredients:
- 2 cups whole wheat flour (or all-purpose flour)
- 1/2 cup natural, xylitol-free peanut butter
- 1/2 cup low-sodium chicken broth (ensure it contains no onion or garlic powder)
- 1 large egg
- 1/4 cup rolled oats (optional, for texture)
Instructions:
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Combine Wet Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the egg, peanut butter, and chicken broth until smooth and well combined.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour and rolled oats (if using).
- Form Dough: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a stiff dough forms. You may need to use your hands to knead the last bit of flour in. If the dough is too dry, add a teaspoon of broth; if it’s too sticky, add a tablespoon of flour.
- Roll and Cut: On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough out to about 1/4-inch thickness. Use a cookie cutter (a small bone shape is always a hit!) to cut out the treats. Reroll and cut the remaining dough.
- Bake: Place the treats on the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden brown and the treats are firm.
- Cool and Store: Let the treats cool completely on a wire rack. This is crucial for them to harden and become crunchy.
Storage: Store cooled treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week, or in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. For longer storage, freeze them for up to 3 months.
